Global News Inside Health

Preventive cholera vaccination programs are being restarted around the world after being paused for almost four years due to critical vaccine shortages, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced this week. The resumption comes as global stockpiles of oral cholera vaccines recovered to nearly 70 million doses nearly double the levels seen during the shortage that triggered the hiatus.

In a joint statement with WHO, the vaccine alliance GAVI and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), health agencies confirmed that the improved global supply now allows nations to transition from reactive outbreak responses to proactive preventive campaigns in high-risk populations.

According to WHO, vaccine stocks had fallen sharply in 2022 as demand surged during a global wave of cholera outbreaks, forcing health authorities to reserve supplies exclusively for emergency responses. This limited stockpile prevented routine preventive vaccination efforts, which play a key role in stopping transmission and protecting vulnerable communities before outbreaks begin.

The expanded supply has now made it possible to reallocate an initial 20 million doses for preventive campaigns. Initial distributions include about 3.6 million doses to Mozambique, 6.1 million to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and 10.3 million destined for Bangladesh all regions facing elevated cholera risk.

According to partners, the increase in vaccine availability reflects years of coordination between international agencies, manufacturers, and funding partners. GAVI financed the increased stockpile, with UNICEF handling procurement and delivery to frontline health systems.

While vaccines are a vital tool in controlling cholera a severe diarrhoeal disease spread through contaminated water and food partners emphasize that immunization must be paired with long-term investments in safe water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure to effectively reduce disease burden.

The redevelopment of preventive vaccination capacity marks a significant milestone in global public health, offering renewed hope for communities long vulnerable to cholera’s devastating impacts.
